After introducing resolutions that condemned the president’s actions leading to the war, Lincoln finished his term and temporarily retreated from politics to focus on law, and Greeley reached new heights with his publishing record, influencing audiences on an international level. Lincoln had, in 1842, stepped aside from the chance to run again for the Illinois state legislature and, as he would do at various times before his 1860 presidential campaign, shifted focus to his legal career. ”1 Developing his legal career, Abraham Lincoln’s clients in law included railroad and insurance companies, merchants, manufacturers, and banks.

Although little came of Lincoln’s bill—he backed away from it upon realizing it lacked support—it did illustrate his willingness to take a strong position on an unpopular issue. After vigorous objections to revisions in the original Gott resolution, including threats of disunion from southern representatives, the House ended discussion on the measure by voting to drop it from further discussion. ”27 Lincoln had little to say about his experiences with Greeley in the House, but the man who as president would later sign the Greeleyinspired Homestead Act at first had not left a dramatic impression on Greeley, either.

Polk, however, had managed to win 170 electoral votes to Clay’s 105, with a difference of only 5,000 votes from New York separating Clay from the White House. Lincoln took Clay’s defeat as a cue to redouble his efforts in seeking higher office—a seat in Congress— while Greeley, upon hearing the news, broke down in tears. The defeat marked a critical turning point in the careers of both men—for Lincoln as an Illinois legislator and a lawyer and for Greeley as a popular New York publisher—leading both of them to congressional office and revealing to the nation both who they were and what the likely trajectories of their subsequent lives would be.
