This hardly differentiates it from an indicative abstract the nature of which will be discussed in Chapter 3. The clearest and most useful distinction, however, is to say that annotations reflect the content of books while abstracts – as defined earlier – reflect the most important content of journal articles (Koltay, 2003). 29 Abstracts and Abstracting The word synopsis was formerly used to denote author abstracts with the aim of differentiating them from abstracts written by professional abstractors.

However, this is not the same as being critical. Opinions differ, but for most purposes, the abstractor’s standpoint has to be objective and impersonal, with no attempt at individual interpretation or polemics (Ashworth, 1973). Objectivity comes across in the style of the abstract as well. For example, the abstract should not include emotional or expressive elements of style that could give it an individualistic tone (Gläser, 1990). A more theoretical approach to the issue of objectivity is as follows.

This is summed up by Ashworth (1973: 134) in the following way: While attention may be drawn to an obvious error, giving little space to the abstract or ignoring the article entirely is the only acceptable way of showing lack of value. As space cannot be allowed in the abstracting journal for authors to reply it is at least unfair to adopt a critical style. This is the reason that critical abstracts are rare and why most abstracting services rely upon the refereeing procedure to eliminate insignificant and inaccurate documents (Rowley, 1988).
